The Peace Corps is an overseas volunteer program run by the U.S. Government. Founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, it strives to engender peace and friendship in sister countries while strengthening a cultural and economic partner in order to promote self-sufficiency. Common fields of service include education (especially English training), business and information services development, and agricultural and environmental protection and production. Since its inception, the Peace Corps has sent over 200,000 volunteers to 139 different countries.
